ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 Alumni meets in AMU for Silver Jubilee Reunion
Aligarh, December 31: The Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET) Batch 1987-1991 met at their Alma Mater for a Silver Jubilee Reunion to reminisce the wonderful memories. The Inaugural Function of the Reunion took place at the Assembly Hall of ZHCET.
While delivering the Keynote address, the Chief Guest to the Function, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) asked the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 to relive their years spent the University. He urged the alumni gathered for the reunion to also take a tour of the University and see the significant changes, which have taken place.
“You will find smart-class rooms, new roads, new buildings, an overall better infrastructure and better teaching and studying facilities among many other things, during you trip to the various departments and faculties in the University,” added the Vice Chancellor.
He further said that the vast renovation work of Strachey Hall and Kennedy Hall is almost complete, while a new building for Dawakhana Tibbiya College and J N Medical College Auditorium are also in the stages. “Frank and Debbie Islam Management Complex will be inaugurated very soon and an Olympic size Swimming Pool has been inaugurated recently,” said the Vice Chancellor.
Gen Shah also urged the alumni to visit the University more often and give guest lectures for sharing their industry experience with the students. He said that the university is greatful to the alumni for their monetary contribution and looks forward for having alumni-student interaction.
“I request our distinguished alumni to come forward and extend moral and financial support, which will go a long way in making AMU No 1 University in the country,” said the Vice Chancellor adding that the alumni will be happy to learn that AMU has been graded as the second best Indian University by the US News and World Report for the second consecutive time.
He also pointed out that AMU also runs ten schools, which are feeder institutions to the university and students attending these schools are taught information technology from Class 1.
In a special address, Professor Mohammad Idrees, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology said emotions must be running high as the alumni gathered today re-visit their Alma Mater, while introducing their families to the University, which is so dear to them.
He added that the University stands happy and proud to see that the students of the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 have proved themselves by reaching the at the best positions of their respective fields.
Prof Idress further urged the alumni to pay back in the best possible ways suited to them. “There have been important changes in the University and more initiatives are awaited, the alumni can share their industry experiences with the present students besides other valuable contributions,” said Prof Idrees.
During the Inaugural Address, Prof M M Suyan Beg, Principal, ZHCET said that reunion and nostalgia are synonymous as it is a flashback to those glorious years spent together. He added that the chance of introducing our families to our bachelor day’s friends is both exciting as well as blushing and a sense of accomplishment is accompanied by quiet prayers on the lips that a secret or two from those days should not slip out.
Prof Beg further said that reunion is also a time to carry on with this legacy for our future generations to continue to reap the harvest. “The alumni can also give lectures, training, mentoring and placement advices among many other contributions, they can make,” said Prof Beg.
He pointed out that a silver jubilee is an ideal time as we turn mature enough to weigh pros and cons of various alternative ways of paying back. “It is in this perspective that I wish to welcome the reunion of ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 and we will try to be the best host.
During the welcome address, Mrs Fawazia Tarranum, ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumnus and President of the Organising Committee said that she graciously acknowledges valuable guidance and support provided by her batch mates and members of the Reunion’s Organising Committee for successfully conducting the programme. She pointed out that it was in December 2015 that the Organising Committee became sure that they are ready for this event.
Mrs Fawazia also announced that as a gesture of the alumni’s commitment to give back to the Alma Mater, the AMU Engineers Trust is donating a sum of Rs 9.5 lakhs towards the IT infrastructure development of the Electronics and Electrical Departments of the Engineering College. The cheque for the donation was later presented to AMU Vice Chancellor. Meanwhile, a Soni Saran Singh scholarship of Rs one lakh was also announced during the function.
After the Vice Chancellor released ‘Reflections’, a commemorative Coffee Table book about the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni, the Chief Editor of the Book, Captain S M Urooj Athar, who is also a ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumnus said that it was when the discussions began about organising a reunion function, I suggested publication of this memoir and I knew that the idea would find resonance with most of my batch mates.
Mementoes were later presented to the Guests. ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni Mrs Babita Bhargava and Mrs Seema Kumar Singh conducted the programme and proposed the vote of thanks respectively. Ms Seema Bedi, the treasurer of the AMU Engineers Trust was also present on the occasion and so were 225 people, which included the ZHCET Batch 1987-1991 alumni and their family members.
Meanwhile, the webcast of the event was watched live by many more alumni and non-alumni across the world through the University website. The alumni of the 1987-91 batch have brought laurels to their Alma Mater, being high achievers across various fields of activities, both in India as well as abroad, in public sector as well as private sector.
Later in the day panel discussions and interactive sessions were also held to help the University students prepare for the challenges of post-college life.
In the afternoon, a tree plantation drive was organised in the college premises as a symbolic gesture towards a greener future for the University with a hundred saplings been planted. Special displays were organised at the Skating Rink and the Riding Club. The culminating function of the Reunion event was the scintillating cultural evening put together by the University Drama club at the Kennedy Hall.
AMUSU organise Ex-Office Bearers Meet-2016
Aligarh, December 31: While addressing the Ex-Office Bearers Meet-2016 organized by Aligarh Muslim University Student’s Union, Mr Abdul Hafeez Gandhi, former president of AMUSU, said that one has to develop a neutral attitude towards religion and adopt tolerant thinking.
He said that the girl’s representation should be made maximum in the AMU student’s Union. Mr Gandhi also said that the students of AMU should also come forward to raise the issues other than Muslims like those of Dalits and Tribals. While highlighting the recent efforts put up by AMU Public Relations Office, including that of projecting a positive image of AMU in the national media, he hoped that the efforts would lead the institution to derive the best possible results.
Mr Farrukh Khan, former secretary of AMUSU, told that we have a strong affinity for AMU. Speaking about the ongoing issue of Minority character of AMU, he hoped that the judgement will be in favor of AMU and the people will not derive a political advantage of the present scenario keeping in view the upcoming UP State elections. Mr Khan urged the AMU alumnus settled in different parts of the world to rebut any information or news circulated in the social media which may hamper the image of the institution.
Mr Mohammad Adeeb, former president of AMUSU and also a former Minister of Parliament, said that AMU is known for its rich cultural heritage and tradition and every student of AMU carries the rich culture in his soul.
Mr Hafiz Azam Baig, also a former president of AMUSU, appealed the students to strengthen the Student’s Union with their cooperation and trust. He resorted to adopting positive thinking towards life in order to achieve the desired objectives.
Mr Khalid Masood and Mr S Mazin H Zaidi, former office bearers of AMUSU also addressed on the occasion.
The program was conducted by Mr Nabeel Usmani, Hony. Secretary of AMU student’s Union while Mr Faizul Hasan, President, AMUSU proposed the vote of thanks.
Mr Mohd Nadeem Ansari also expressed his views on the rising issues related to AMU.
AMU's Engineering College organizes workshop on Bio Medical Engineering
ALIGARH, December 31: The Department of Electrical Engineering, Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University, organized a week long Workshop on "Biomedical Engineering: Insight and Signal Processing" under the aegis of Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN).
Inaugurating the workshop, Professor A.L. Vyas, Professor Emeritus, IIT Delhi, said that organizing such workshops on biomedical engineering would be highly benefited for the students as well as for the Researchers.
He spoke about his research on biomedical signal processing in both active and passive ways.
"Diseases were diagnosed through wrist pulse signals in old Ayurveda while in modern medical sciences, such ailments are diagnosed by different electronic devices", said Professor Vyas adding that engineers have discovered new ways to process these signals using a variety of mathematical formulae and algorithms.
He also highlighted the significance of different pressure signals and presented a deep insight on signal processing.
Welcoming the guests, Professor Yusufuzzama Khan, AMU Controller of Examination and Course Coordinator said that the GIAN scheme is an initiative of MHRD aimed at tapping talents and creating a pool of international scientists to promote high end research.
‘Delegates from different parts of the country are participating in the week-long workshop”, said Prof. Khan.
Professor Mohammad Idrees, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, while speaking about the objectives of ‘GIAN’ said that it provides opportunity to faculty members to learn and share knowledge.
"Biomedical engineering is the application of the principles and problem solving techniques of engineering in biology and medicine for health care purposes and it uses and applies an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in the engineering design process", said Prof. Idrees.
Professor Sufiyan Beg, Principal, Z.H. Engineering College hoped that the delegates and participants will be benefited from different technical sessions spread over a week.
Prof. Zeeshan presented vote of thanks while Ms. Sadaf Iqbal conducted the programme.
On the occasion, Prof. Palani, University of Kent, UK, Prof. Mirza Mohammad Mohsin and Prof. Asad Ullah Khan, local coordinator of the GIAN were also present.
VC X1 and Commissioner X1 play friendly cricket match
ALIGARH, December 31: AMU Vice Chancellor Eleven defeated Commissioner Eleven by 34 runs in a friendly cricket match played between AMU Vice-Chancellor Eleven and Commissioner Eleven at Willingdon Cricket Pavilion of Aligarh Muslim University.
Aligarh Commissioner Mr. Subhash Chand Sharma, Captain, Commissioner Eleven, won the toss and decided to ball first.
AMU Vice Chancellor Eleven scored 164 in fixed 20 overs. Mohammad Saif from Vice Chancellor Eleven scored highest 87 runs in just 59 balls and Dr. Wasif Ali scored 32 runs.
Aligarh Commissioner Mr. Subhash Chand Sharma and Parveen Sharma from Commissioner Eleven took one wicket, respectively.
Commissioner Eleven, while chasing the target of 165 runs, scored 134 only in 20 overs.
Mr. D.S. Sachan, CDO, Aligarh scored highest 28 runs and Mr. Subhash Chand Sharma, Commissioner, Aligarh scored 12. Meraj Ali and Qamar from Vice Chancellor Eleven took four and two wickets respectively.
Tahmeed Ahmad and Mirza Hashir Beg were appointed as umpires of this friendly match.

Aligarh Muslim University’s seven students got selected in UPSC.
ALIGARH, December 31: Seven students from the Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University have been selected for the post of Assistant Geologist in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines, Government of India, through a recruitment test conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Professor Liaqat Ali Khan Rao, Chairman, Department of Geology, said that Mohammad Khatib Khan, Khush Navi, Md. Sarif Khan, Ebadur Rahman, Ilyas, Rais Alam and Ariba Kamal have qualified the prestigious examination.
Professor Rao further said that success of these students is a testimony of their hard work, dedication and guidance offered by the department. He assured that the Department will continue to provide them facilities to excel in their career.
UGC Human Resource Development Centre, AMU concludes Subject Refresher Course in Languages and Special Winter School on Disaster Management
Aligarh, December 31: The UGC Human Resource Development Centre, Aligarh Muslim University recently concluded a Subject Refresher Course in Languages (Arabic, Persian and Urdu) and a Special Winter School on Disaster Management.
Over 90 University and College teachers from various states including Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh were enrolled for these three weeks courses.
While addressing the Valedictory Function, the Chief Guest, Padamshree Professor Akhtarul Wasey, Vice Chancellor, Maulana Azad University, Jodhpur said that it was during his student days in Aligarh that he learnt that religion does not teach personal animosity.
He added that teachers should share only factual inferences of their research and not dogma. “As responsible citizens, we should provide neighbourly help before Government aid in case of a disaster,” further said Prof Wasey.
Professor Abdur Rahim Kidwai, Director UGC Human Resource Development Centre, AMU felicitated the guests and the teachers. On the occasion, Prof Kidwai said that lessons of living peacefully across differences are the most valuable lessons of these courses.
Prof Kidwai hailed the out station participants, who faced inconveniences caused due to unavailability of cash post-demonetisation while adding that words fail to appreciate the courageous step of the government towards corruption free governance and transparent economy by opting for e-cash.
Meanwhile, Course Coordinators Prof Shahab Fazal, Department of Geography and Prof Saghir Afraheim, Department of Urdu, AMU facilitated the certificate distribution.
While Course participant, Dr Anant Kumar Yadav from Uttar Pradesh gave the feed-back on Special Winter School on Disaster Management, Dr Mahmood Hafiz Abdul Rub Mirza from Uttar Pradesh and Dr Kousar Muzamil from Jammu and Kashmir gave feed-backs on Subject Refresher Course in Languages.
All the speakers expressed their deep sense of appreciation for the academic atmosphere at Aligarh.

AMU Sr Secondary School students qualify NDA exam
Aligarh, December 31: Bringing laurels to the Aligarh Muslim University, six Saiyyid Hamid Sr Secondary School (Boys) students have qualified the National Defence Academy (NDA) Examination. The selection of these students has come after the School Principal, Major S M Mustafa’s initiative of motivating the students for joining armed forces.
Meanwhile, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) has greeted students Aman Pratap Singh, Mohd Kamran Ali, Junaid Ahmad, Rishabh Kant Singh, Khageria Singh Chauhan and Tarun Yadav for the success.
Last year, two students had qualified for National Defence Academy Examination and Armed Forces Medical College, Pune through Army Service Selection Board.
Condolence Meeting held
Aligarh, December 31: A condolence meeting to mourn the sad demise of Mr.Abdul Raheem, senior programmer, was today held at conference room of the Registrar Office, Administrative Block, Aligarh Muslim University.
While presiding over the meeting, Professor Javed Akhtar, Registrar AMU said that Mr. Abdul Raheem was a person of good character and he was committed to his duties.
Professor Akhtar added that he had been associated with Mr. Raheem for the last 30 years and always found him dedicated towards his work. He assured the university administration will provide all the possible help to his family.
Professor Akhtar appealed to recite Quran for the forgiveness of departed soul. He also read out the condolence resolution.
Meanwhile, Mr. Bilal Ahmad also expressed deep sense of sorrow and grief over the sad demise of Late Abdul Raheem.
Born at Kolhi village of District Gonda in 1962, Mr. Abdul Raheem started his career as statistical assistant from interdisciplinary centre of development at the Department of Economics in 1985. Thereafter, he had been appointed as research assistant. Later, he joined as senior programmer of computer cell in registrar office in 1991.
The deceased is survived by his wife, son and daughters. Mr. Raheem was diabetic and died of kidney failure on.
Department of Mass Communications concludes two-day workshop
Aligarh, December 31: The Department of Mass Communications, Aligarh Muslim University recently concluded a two-day workshop on ‘Emerging Trends of Journalism for Vernacular Journalists’. The Workshop was organised in collaboration with the British High Commission and University Grants Commission Human Resource Development Centre (UGC HRDC), AMU. AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) inaugurated the Workshop.
More than 50 journalists from Hindi and Urdu newspapers from various cities of Uttar Pradesh participated in the Workshop, in which special lectures were delivered by experts on gender sensitization, development journalism, social and interactive media, covering human rights, covering minorities and marginalised sections of society, covering international affairs, impact of Television on Urdu and Hindi newspapers and language proficiency.
Addressing the function, AMU Vice Chancellor said that it is necessary to not fall under the impact of sensational journalism. He urged the vernacular journalists present on the occasion to do rational stories with human interest values.
“The modern technology has it’s impact on our lives and journalism is no exception as information reaches distant corners of the world in few seconds,” said General Shah adding that during the World War II, when journalism and media organisations in many countries were in their nascent stage, information flow was a lot slower.
Mr Jayshankar Gupta, Executive Editor, Deshbandu pointed out that it is the need of the hour that media organisations should do more stories to sensitise people on the issues of the poor and under privileged rather than doing sensational journalism, which diverts people from real issues.
Mr Gupta added that he strongly feels that Television journalism has taken political reporting to lower levels while doing yellow journalism.
Mr Asad Mirza, Press and Communication Advisor of Urdu Division, British High Commission said that since eight out of the top ten newspapers in terms of circulation are vernacular, it is clear that there are more newspaper readers of vernacular languages than English. He added that considering the Indian newspaper reading trends, this Workshop has been specifically organised for the vernacular media.
Mr Upendera Singh, Press and Communication Advisor of Hindi Division, British High Commission said it is the duty of the new generation of journalists to safeguard ethical values in journalism. He added that with the growing trend of sensational news, people have started to have doubts on the authenticity of media and it is high time for media professionals to pull up their socks for cleaning media image.
Mr Arun Aditya, Editor, Amar Ujala urged the vernacular journalists to work with professional ethics so that media reliability is maintained. He added that journalism is still a profession with mission and young generation of scribes should work with this responsibility.
While conducting the programme, Professor Shafey Kidwai, Director of the Workshop said that there was an era, when the media organisations were doing protest journalism. “However, with the impact of technology and other factors, journalism has become very different,” said Prof Kidwai.

General Shah inaugurates Exhibition on Sir Syed at Ibne Sina Academy
Aligarh, December 31: The Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) and his wife Mrs Sabiha Seemi recently inaugurated an exhibition on Sir Syed Ahmad Khan at the Ibne Sina Academy. The Exhibition which will continue till October 17, 2017 is a part of Sir Syed Bi-Centennial Celebration.
Professor A R Kidwai, Chairman, Sir Syed Bi-Centennial Celebration and Director of UGC HRD Centre, AMU and Professor Syed Zillur Rahman, President, Ibn Sina Academy was also present on the occasion, which was attended by dignitaries and teachers.
“The exhibition has over 200 published books by Sir Syed and other scholars including periodicals,” said the organisers adding that Ibne Sina Academy is also displaying rare documents, artifacts, photographs, badges, mementoes, invitation cards on programs related to Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
“This Exhibition will also have paper weights used by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, postal stamps depicting pictures of Sir Syed, complete files of Tahzibul Akhlaq of 1874 and 1875 and rare books namely Seerat-e Faridia, Musalmano ki Qismat Ka Faisla, Al-Nazar fi Baaz Masail al –Ghazali and Muqadma Tafsir Haqqani,” confirmed the organisers.
They added that Exhibition is also displaying publications and comparative studies on Sir Syed’s life, his political views, his education and social reforms. “The exhibition will also have letters, books and journals authored by Sir Syed,” said the organisers.
Prof Absar appointed as Director, Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre
Aligarh, December 31: Professor Absar Ahmad has been recently appointed as the Director of the newly created Interdisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre, Aligarh Muslim University with immediate effect.
Prof Ahmad was a Senior Principal Scientist, Biochemical Science Division, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune before joining as a Professor with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in AMU.
JNMC inaugurates Cath Lab
Aligarh, December 31: Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) and eminent alumnus, Padma Bhushan Dr Ashok Seth, Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi today inaugurated Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College’s Cardiology Cath Lab by unveiling the plaque to be placed at the Lab.
With the inauguration, JNMC will be the only medical college and hospital to have a cath lab in the distance of Kanpur to Delhi.
The Chief Guest, Dr Ashok Seth, who is instrumental in bringing the Cath Lab to JNMC said that being an alumnus of JNMC, AMU, it is his duty to equip the hospital with the best of facilities.
Recollecting memories from early days of his career, Dr Seth added that he didn’t wanted to become a cardiologist. “But, today with this inaugural I have realised that I was destined to be a small part of the great achievement of JNMC and AMU,” further said Dr Seth. Before the inauguration ceremony, Dr Seth had also performed angioplasty on two patients at the Centre of Cardiology, JNMC.
Dr Seth also said that he has now realised that God willed him to become a cardiologist as he was gifted with the skills required in the profession.
Presiding over the function, AMU Vice Chancellor, General Shah pointed out that today with the inaugural of the Cath Lab, AMU and JNMC today witnesses a ‘Red-Letter’ Day.
General Shah added that this Cath-Lab will play a very important role for AMU and it’s Medical College to further climb up All-India rankings and at the same time it will be a realisation of the AMU’s commitment to the needy people, who cannot otherwise afford expensive treatments at private hospitals.
He further said that Dr Ashok Seth and other leading cardiologists of the country are guiding us in our steps to bring in more facilities in the Centre of Cardiology in particular and JNMC in general. “We stand very proud of our Cath Lab,” said the Vice Chancellor in the conclusion of his address.
Professor Tariq Mansoor, Principal, JNMC said that the Cath Lab marks the beginning of a new era as it brings purpose and responsibility. He also informed that there is another Cath-Lab, which will soon be launched.
He further pointed out that India Today and Neilson Group has ranked AMU’s Medical College as the 12th Best Medical College out of 400 medical colleges in India and soon JNMC will start a new DM course in Cardiology.
Prof M U Rabbani, former Director, Centre of Cardiology, JNMC and Vice President of the Cardiology Society of India, UP Chapter pointed out that the newly inaugurated Cath Lab will cater to a population of 6-8 crores as there is no other Cath Lab in between Kanpur and Delhi.
He added that the Centre of Cardiology, JNMC since its initial days has been treating patients and planting several hundreds of pacemakers but there was always a big demand to have Cath-Lab, which has been fulfilled with the determination and efforts of the AMU administration and Dr Ashok Seth.
Prof Rabbani pointed out that the in the past few years, the Vice Chancellor has been personally speaking to all necessary government officials for launching this Cath-Lab in JNMC.
Prof Rabbani also said that our team is elated as today our long nurtured wish has reached it’s final destination.
Prof Asif Hasan, Director, Centre of Cardiology, JNMC said that the JNMC’s Centre of Cardiology is integrating with Escorts Heart Institute and other top institutes of the country for further developments.
He informed that soon a fund collected through donations for angioplasty procedures for the needy people will be started and there will be regular lectures by eminent cardiologists from different parts of the country and abroad.
Prof Hasan also said that this Cath Lab couldn’t have become a reality without the support and dedication of the AMU Vice Chancellor and the University Administration.
While addressing the guests, Prof D K Agarwal, Faculty of Medicine said that today is a great moment in the history of AMU as this Cath Lab will help the people from the lower economic strata. He thanked the Vice Chancellor and AMU Administration for bringing this day.

‘Wings of Desire’ distributes blankets on New-Year Eve
Aligarh, December 31: AMU students run NGO, ‘Wings of Desire’ has distributed blankets to under-privileged girls in various areas of Aligarh City on new-year’s eve. The blanket distribution is a part of Uttar Pradesh’s biggest blanket distribution drive for under-privileged girls conducted in various cities of Aligarh, Badaun, Kanpur, Lucknow, Gorakpur, Gonda, Gazipur, Basti, Hatras and Meerut.
AMU student volunteers of the NGO were helped by student volunteers of D S College in the distribution drive.
Professor Zakia Siddiqui, Prof Shahid Siddiqui, Dr Zia-ur-Rehman, Mr Praveen Agarwal, Mr Sameer Sherwani, Mr Mohd Azeem Khan, Mr Salim Usmani, Mr Taufeeq, Ms Swati, Ms Madhuri, Mr Saket were present on the occasion.
AMU Calendar 2017 out for sale
Aligarh, December 31: As a part of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s Bicentenary Celebration, the Aligarh Muslim University Calendar 2017 is out for sale. The Calendar is available at the Publications Division of the University.
The Calendar presents a conspectus of Sir Syed’s illustrious life and career, interspersed with historic photographs and apt quotations. Those interested in the AMU history will find using it highly rewarding.
