AMU scholar to join prestigious Presidency College as Assistant
Professor
Aligarh, January 6: Mr Md Sayad Rahman, Junior
Research Fellow (BSR UGC) associated with the Department of Geology, Aligarh
Muslim University has recently been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the
prestigious Presidency College, Kolkata.
Mr Rahman, who will soon join the Presidency College’s
Department of Geology has been congratulated by the AMU Administration and
teachers for bringing laurels to the University.
“Mr Rahman’s appointment in Presidency College testifies his
hard work, dedication along with guidance offered by AMU’s Department of
Geology,” said Professor Liaquat Ali Khan Rao, Chairperson, Department of
Geology, AMU. He added that Department will continue to provide every facility
to him to excel in his career.
Founded in 1817 and upgraded to university status in 2010, the
Presidency College has a unique place in history as it was one of the first
institutes in India to offer education based on Western system.
After winning Roller Sports Championship, AMU Skating Club Team
will represent Uttar Pradesh in 54th National Roller Skating Championship
Aligarh, January 6: The Senior, Junior and Sub Junior teams of Aligarh Muslim
University’s Skating club have brought laurels to the University by winning
Roller Sports Championship, Uttar Pradesh. The 30 members of these teams will
now represent Uttar Pradesh in the 54th National Roller Skating Championship
to be held at Jodhpur from January 25 to January 29, 2017.
Mohd Yaqzaan, Mohd Areeb, Umar Arif, Aftab Alam, Santhosh GM,
Mohd Labeeb Akbar, Ahmad Kamal Beg, Adeeb Anwar and Ashab Ahmad are members of
the Senior Team, while the Junior Team includes Mohd Sajid, Tarukh Mohsin,
Naeemurn Rehman, SM Kumail Abbas Zaidi, Afraaz Khan, Syed Mohd Abdullah, Arij
Aftab, Rizwan Ahmad, Ahmad Musa and Mohd Amanullah Farooqui.
Mohd Ibrahium Khan, Zohan Sheerani, Shahzeb Khan, Suboor Sajid,
Mohd Bazan, Mohd Ayan Arshad Khan, Sadiq Alyas, Mohd Hamza, Mohd Arsh and Ashar
Siddiqui are in the Sub-Junior Team.
Professor Mohammad Shoaib Zaheer, Secretary, University Games
Committee have congratulated the teams for the achievement. He added that the
University Games Committee will keep on guiding them.
Prof Rezavi delivers IHC Session Annual Symposium
lecture
ALIGARH, January 7: Professor Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi, Deputy
Coordinator, Centre of Advance Study in History, Aligarh Muslim University
recently delivered the Annual Symposium lecture of
the 77th session of Indian
History Congress (IHC) on the topic of 'The Nation and the Monuments', in which
he gave detailed deliberations on ‘Mughal Monuments and the Nation’. The IHC
session was held at the University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
This session had a
robust participation from the Aligarh Muslim University as Prof Shireen Moosvi, retired AMU’s Department
of History academic attended the programme as the General President. AMU
Professors associated with the University’s Department of History, Prof Ishrat
Alam and Prof Ramesh Rawat were the Secretary and Treasurer of the session
respectively.
AMU teachers Prof Shamir Hasan, Dr Jabir Raza, Dr Shamim Akhtar and Dr
Jawaid Akhtar also presented papers during the IHC session.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the IHC session have confirmed that eminent
historian Prof Irfan Habib, emeritus Professor, AMU will attend the next
session as the IHC Vice-President, while Prof Shireen Moosvi and Professor Syed
Ali Nadeem Rezavi will attend the forth coming session as IHC Executive Members.
AMU PVC’s mother in
law passes away
ALIGARH, January 7: Mrs
Tameez Bano (90), mother-in-law of Aligarh Muslim University Pro Vice
Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali today passed away after a prolonged illness.
AMU Public Relations
Officer, Mr Omar Saleem Peerzada has expressed deep sorrow on the sad demise of
Mrs Bano and prayed for the solace of Mrs Bano’s family members.
The deceased is
survived by a son and two daughters including Mrs Rizwana Ali, wife of
Brigadier Ali. Mrs Bano’s father late Mr Md Azim was a known political figure
in Allahabad, who hailed from a well-known Zamindar family.
Linguistics seminar concludes
ALIGARH, January 7: The
three-day International Conference on “Mediatization, Culturalisation and
Language Alteration” organized by the Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim
University today concluded while showcasing the alteration, modifications and
innovations in the Language of Media and Market.
Prof. R C Sharma was the chief guest while Mr. Firoz
Bakht Ahmad graced the occasion as guest of honour and Prof. Dan Raj Regmi of
Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal presided over the valedictory function.
In his concluding remarks, Prof. R C Sharma, who was the
chief guest of the valedictory function, said that this field has established
itself as a more or less autonomous discipline in recent years, more so in
India, developing a rich and diverse panoply of theories and methods concerning
the media and recently, information and communication technologies more
broadly. Linguistics plays a key role in the establishment of this new field.
The genesis for the conference found its relevance to
the National Seminar on "Meaning of Meaninglessness" which was held
by the Department of Linguistics in 2015. It may be noted that the Department
is already running a course called Language of Advertising Media and Market (LAMM)
to promote the understanding and appreciation of language of media and market.
It may be noted that a Panel Discussion was also held
during this period with Mr Iqbal Ahmad of BBC World Service, Ms. Arfa Kanum,
Rajya Sabha TV, Professor Ghazanfar Ali, JMI, Professor Pradhan, Mr. Om Thanvi,
Senior Journalist and AMU PRO Mr. Omar S. Peerzada as the panelists who
discussed the changing role of Media in the society and concluded that media
language is often perceived as artificial or thoroughly standardized and
therefore fully distinct from what is thought of as the genuine empirical
object.
A special Skype presentation was made by Professor Nancy
Berg of University of Washington, who provided insights into how
intergenerational methods could be used in varying cultural contexts.
The conference brought together over 40 professionals,
senior journalists and linguists from several countries. A number of faculty
members, research scholars and students benefited from the conference. There
were nine presentations which revolved around the Grammar of Film, about ten on
Advertisements and almost same numbers of stimulating papers were read on Print
and Electronic Media.

Sir Syed Day celebrated in
Chennai
Aligarh, January 9: The Aligarh Muslim
University Alumni Chennai Association recently celebrated the Sir Syed Day,
which was attended by hundreds of students and other guests.
On the occasion, AMU Vice
Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran), who attended the function
as the Chief Guest said that the AMU Administration, teachers, scholars and
students are making sincere efforts to make AMU reach the number one spot in
the rankings of Indian universities. He added that it is hoped that AMU will
reach the number one position in 2017.
General Shah pointed out
that with an aim of having centres and branches in various states and by
following the footsteps of the University founder Sir Syed Ahmad Ahmad Khan,
AMU has started the second Aligarh Movement.
He also pointed out that in
some fields like geology, science and technology, AMU enjoys the reputation of
being the top institute while being ranked as the second best Indian university
by International ranking agencies.
Meanwhile, Professor Suhail
Sabir, Chairperson, Alumni Affairs Committee said that with years of
progressive work and sincere efforts of the University authorities, AMU is on
the right track. In the conclusion of his speech, Prof Sabir also thanked the
alumni for wholeheartedly helping AMU.
During his address, noted
AMU Alumnus, Mr Rizwan Ahmad said that AMU is very closed to his heart. He also
shared with the audience, his experience of attending the last Alumni Meet in
AMU. While presiding over the function and welcoming the guests, AMU Alumnus,
Mr Syed Sifat Ali urged people to understand the contribution of Sir Syed and
the purpose of his efforts, sacrifices and replicate in action and deeds the
best, which can be given back to the alma mater.
Prof Anisa Basheer spoke on
the vision of Sir Syed Ahmad khan. Mr Basheer Ahmad Khan, Mr Vaibhav Gupta, Mr
Abdus Samad, Mr K Prabhakar, Mr Azhar, Mr Azeem Akhter and Mr Azam Sikandar
were also present in the celebrations.
JNMC Cath Lab successfully
conducting procedures
Aligarh, January 9: Since the inception and of
the newly established Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab) in Aligarh Muslim
University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), the Centre of Cardiology
doctors have so far successfully done over 51 cases including the routine
angiographies, angioplasties, cath studies, radial angiography and pacemaker
cases.
Recently a 45-year-old
patient suffering with anterior-wall-myocardial-infarction was successfully
treated by a team comprising of Professor Asif Hasan, Director, Centre of
Cardiology and Professor M U Rabbani, former Director, Centre of Cardiology.
Meanwhile, another patient with anterior-wall-myocardial-infarction was taken
for angioplasty. These treatment procedures at the Centre are been done nominal
rates.
Professor Hasan said that the Centre’s
mission is to provide comprehensive quality based cardiac services and to take
up cases of complex interventions along with services related to Rheumatic
heart disease, congenital heart disease and arrhythmia related problems.
