Prof. Nadeem Khalil attends Jal Manthan programme

ALIGARH, January 31: Professor Nadeem Khalil, Department of Civil Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University recently participated in the one-day conference ‘Jal Manthan’ organized by the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India.

Prof. Nadeem, while making a presentation on "Wastewater Treatment, Its Safe Reuse and Recycle in Rural India", talked about the natural processes of wastewater treatment using low-cost sustainable technologies like constructing Wetlands for rural areas and focusing on its potential under the prestigious ongoing Ganga Clean-up Mission. He pointed out that rural sector in India has remained neglected with wastewater management facilities, though about 70% of India’s population lived in villages, which is also responsible for major pollution to Indian rivers, especially Ganga and Yamuna.

Prof. Nadeem also highlighted the result of successful implementation of Indo-European Union research project, Safe-guarding Water Resources in India with Green & Sustainable Technologies (SWINGS) developed at the Aligarh Muslim University.

“A general consensus emerged at the conference to bring together various stakeholders involved in river rejuvenation schemes, water supply and sewerage boards, municipalities, pollution control boards and academicians to deliberate the indigenous research and best practices for water resources and wastewater management," said Prof. Nadeem.

CEC, AMU starts XIII International Conference of Indian Society for Theatre Research

Aligarh, January 31: The Cultural Education Centre (CEC), Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with Indian Society of Theatre Research (ISTR)  started a three-day XIII International Conference of Indian Society for Theatre Research on ‘Travelling Performance and Theatre Cultures: Assessing Praxis, Paradigms and Perspectives’.

Noted theatre and film personality, Mr M K Raina, who attended the inaugural function of the programme as the Chief Guest said that any university is a safety wall of democratic system, where there is a space for youngsters to create ideas and work on innovations. He added that folk music, theatre and other cultural activities are symbolic of a composite society and these arts need to be researched.

Mr Raina also delivered a plenary address on ‘Theatre in Conflict: A Case of Kashmir’. He urged the AMU administration to start a separate department for theatre studies.

Presiding over the function, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) said that it is imperative for theatre professionals and researchers to accept necessary changes, which are taking place in today’s world.

He added that the existing cinema world in India and other countries has a huge contribution from theatre personalities. General Shah further said that there is however a need for theatre to become more versatile.

Professor Ravi Chaturvedi, Founder President, ISTR addressed the gathering by providing insights on travelling performances and its evolution in India.

Prof David Whitton, Lancaster University, UK said that theatre performances and plays have always been a part of mainstream education and humans have the tendency to these cultural activities in their daily lives.

Prof Boris Dausa Pastor, Intitut Del Teater, Barcelona, Spain said that Indian folk cultural activities including the street plays and theatre has a huge impact on him and he is particularly interested in exploring more from the folk theatre.

Delivering the key-note address, Prof Datttreya Dutt, Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkatta talked about the history of theatre culture and the obstacles faced.

Dr Vibha Sharma, Organising Secretary of the Conference talked about the focus areas of the Conference, which included deliberations on Jatra, Nautanki, Chaon, Sufi folk among other topics.

Prof F S Sheerani, Coordinator, CEC welcomed the guests, while Dr Sidharth Chakraborty proposed the vote of thanks. Later in the day, a panel discussion on ‘Mass Movements and Performative Mobility’ chaired by Prof Harish Narang and forum on ‘Religio-Cultural Performances’ chaired by Prof S Asif Naqvi took place.        

AMU Vice Chancellor inaugurates three-day book exhibition

Aligarh, January 31: Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) recently inaugurated a three-day long Book Exhibition at the Varsity’s Maulana Azad Library. The exhibition has books from various areas of human knowledge.  

While inaugurating the exhibition, the Vice Chancellor said that it is a good opportunity for the faculty, students and book lovers to add to their collections, the latest and useful books without going anywhere as it is at their doorstep.

He also appreciated the efforts of Dr Nabi Hasan, AMU Librarian for putting in hard work for organizing the exhibition.

The AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran); Professor Tariq Mansoor, Principal, J N Medical College; Prof M M Sufiyan Beg, Principal, Z H College of Engineering and Technology; Prof M Amanullah Khan, Dean, Faculty of Medicine and a host of other senior functionaries were also present on the occasion.

During the inaugural function, AMU Librarian, Dr Hasan informed that a total of 17 publishers and vendors are participating in the exhibition, which will continue until Jan 25, 2017. He urged students, scholars and teachers to avail the maximum advantage of the exhibition, which has so far been attended by a large number of people from the academic community.

AMU PVC visits UMEED Firdaus Nagar Center

Aligarh, January 31: Aligarh Muslim University Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) today visited the UMEED Firdaus Nagar Center, which is run by AMU Alumnus and Senior Consultant General Surgeon, Dr Mohsin Raza. On the visit, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor distributed jackets to over 150 slum children from neighbouring slums.

On the occasion, Brigadier Ali addressed the slum children and appreciated the volunteers, who have initiated the UMEED project for the literacy of kids from the down trodden section. Brigadier Ali also pointed out that soon, he will himself start a similar program.   

He added that the slum children associated with the ‘SHOW THEM SCHOOL’ Project will soon attend different schools and achieve great success in their lives. Brigadier Ali added that it will be very nice to see these kids attending AMU for their higher studies. The Pro Vice Chancellor later visited the Juggee Complex, which is occupied mainly by rag pickers and rikshaw pullers.

Meanwhile, Dr Naseem Ahmad and Dr Qurratul Ain promised to include the Firdaus Nagar slum in their teaching and development program.

The Medics volunteers who look after the administration at UMEED Firdaus Nagar Center accompanied the Pro Vice Chancellor during the visit.

Prof Shahid Siddiqi, a founder member of group and Miss Shahnoor Shan Mohammad from the Department of Linguistics, AMU were also present on the occasion.

National Voters’ Day: AMU Registrar makes University officials pledge to vote

Aligarh, January 31: On the occasion of National Voters’ Day, Pledge taking ceremony was held in the Administrative block of the Aligarh Muslim University. Professor Javaid Akhter, Registrar, Aligarh Muslim University today made the non-teaching staff of the University including the staff of the Registrar Office, Controller Office and Finance Office take the pledge.

The University officials with the Registrar vowed: “We the citizens of India, having abiding faith in democracy, hereby pledge to uphold the democratic traditions of our country and the dignity of free, fair and peaceful elections, and to vote in every election fearlessly and without being influenced by considerations of religion, race, caste, community, language or any inducement.”  

On the occasion, Professor Yusuf Uzzaman Khan, Controller and Mrs Yasmin Jalal Beg, Officiating Finance Officer along with the joint registrars, deputy registrars, assistant registrars and other officials were also present.

Meanwhile, students associated with various AMU Schools including the Senior Secondary School (Girls), Saiyyid Hamid Senior Secondary School (Boys), STS School and AMU Girls School participated in the National Voters’ Day Celebrations held at the Qwarsi Crossing area in Aligarh, where the participants formed a human chain to spread the message of maximum participation of voters in the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh elections. Mr Subhash Chand Sharma (IAS), Commissioner, Aligarh City took a vote of pledge during the programme. AMU CEC Coordinator, NSS Coordinator, Women’s College administration and other concerned AMU offices also participated in the programme. The Aligarh Muslim University Public Relations Office team was also present on the occasion to felicitate the participants.     

University News, New Delhi publishes Dr Abbasi’s article on Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum

Aligarh, January 31: Dr Faiza Abbasi’s article titled, ‘Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum: The First Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University’ recently featured in the special issue on Indian Women in the University News, New Delhi, organ of the Association of Indian Universities. Dr Abbasi is the Assistant Director of the UGC Human Resource Development Centre, Aligarh Muslim University. 

While congratulating Dr Abbasi on the achievement, Professor A R Kidwai, Director, UGC Human Resource Development Centre, AMU pointed out that apart from familiarizing readers with the achievements of Sultan Jahan Begum, Dr Abbasi’s article will make people appreciate gender parity at AMU, even in the 1920s. He added that the gender parity in AMU has been maintained to this day and will keep on continuing.

“Women education has received tremendous boost since the present AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) has been at the helm of AMU affairs,” said Prof Kidwai.  

The finely researched article by Dr Faiza Abbasi illustrates the life and times of Nawab Sultan Jahan Begum and her association with AMU founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the Aligarh Movement. The article also throws light on how Sultan Jahan Begum came as a harbinger of women’s education movement.

This article also has detailed information on how Sultan Jahan Begum kept her focus on Women Empowerment by founding several important educational institutions for free and compulsory primary education in 1918. The article also elaborates how Sultan Jahan Begum built technical institutes and schools and her support for the Girl’s School started by Sheikh Abdullah and his wife at AMU.

Dept of Hindi inaugurates Research and Literary Committees

Aligarh, January 31: The Department of Hindi, Aligarh Muslim University recently inaugurated it’s Research Committee and Literary Committee. Professor Nand Kishore Pandey, Director, Central Hindi Institute and President of Technological Terminology Commission attended the function to inaugurate the committees.

On the occasion, Prof Pandey said that Hindi and various regional languages in India are now having new branches of research in various educational and public institutions. He added that Hindi along with other Indian languages needs to be promoted and researched.

While, presiding over the function, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) said that it is important to have special focus on selecting a research subject. He also pointed out that there is a need to promote Indian languages and universities and other institutions should always be forward in doing so.

Guest of Honour, Sheikh Mastan, Dean, Faculty of Arts said that AMU has a tradition of giving opportunities to students for learning languages associated with various regions of the country and world.

Professor Abdul Aleem, Chairperson, Department of Hindi, AMU pointed out that the newly instituted committees in the Department of Hindi are focussed in bringing improvements in the quality of research and literary works associated with Hindi language in AMU.

Prof Shambhunath Tiwari conducted the programme, while Prof Mairaj Ahmad proposed the vote of thanks.

On the occasion, three books authored by Prof Mairaj Ahmad were also released by AMU Pro Vice Chancellor.

Republic day organized in AMU with great fervor

ALIGARH, January 31:  Aligarh Muslim University celebrated 68^th Republic Day in with great fervor and enthusiasm with hoisting of tricolor national flag by the Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah at the historical Strachey Hall. He also took salami from NCC cadets.

While speaking on the occasion, Gen Shah said that Universities are known for their educational and research works. “Aligarh Muslim University’s research programs on Nanotechnology, Solar Energy and Waste water recycling are widely appreciated”, said the Vice Chancellor.

Lt. Gen. Shah said that he tried his level best to place the University on top during his tenure as Vice Chancellor which will end on 16^th May 2017.

Speaking about his achievements, Lt. Gen. Shah said that AMU has constructed a number of Smart Class Rooms, Academic Block, Swimming pools, Hals of residence, roads and completed renovation of historical buildings and Playgrounds. A long awaited Cath Lab has also been established at JN Medical College.

AMU Pro Vice Chancellor Brigadier (veteran) S. Ahmad Ali was also present on the occasion. AMU Registrar Professor Javed Akhtar conducted the program while BA students Ms Alina Khan and Abdul Saboor Kidwai spoke about the significance of Republic Day.

A programme of Eco Fax Run was organized on this occasion in which winners were felicitated by AMU Vice Chancellor. Later Lt. Gen. Shah and his wife Mrs Sabeeha Simi Shah distributed fruits among the patients admitted in University’s Health Centre.

A “Mushaira” was also held at Kennedy Auditorium by Urdu Academy on the eve of the Republic Day.

AMU Students celebrate Republic day at Railway Station.

ALIGARH, January 31: The Wings of Desire, A NGO run by the students of Aligarh Muslim University organized a program at Aligarh Railway Station on the occasion of 68^th Republic Day.

While speaking on the importance of Girls Education, The Guest of Honor Mr Omar Peerzada, Public Relations Officer, AMU said that girls education is necessary for a healthy society. Mr peerzada also announced to bear all expenses of five Students admitted in NGO’s School for one academic year.

Mr Zeeshan Ahmad, APRO, Aligarh Muslim University also graced the occasion as Special Guest. 

The Students from ‘Apna School Project’, a project of NGO, participated in various patriotic activities, cultural programs, choirs and a skit based on the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Campaingn’

The program was conducted by Ms Qudsiya Fateen while Mr R K Pathak, Railway Superintendent was also present. Professor Ziya-Ur-Rahamn, Prof Shahid Siddiqui, Mr Anil Agarwal , Mr, Sameer Sherwani were  present on the occasion.  

AMU EC draws new panel for next VC

ALIGARH January 31: A special meeting of the Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim University was held under the chairmanship of AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah to recommend a panel of five persons to the University Court for the next Vice Chancellor of the University.

The panel of five persons unanimously drawn by the Executive Council includes Dr. Abusaleh Shariff, Executive Director and Chief Scholar, US-India Policy Institute, Washington; Prof. Javaid Akhter, Registrar and former Controller of Examinations and Former Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, AMU; Prof. Mazahir Kidwai, Vice Chancellor of IIMT University, Meerut and former VC, Jivaji University, Gwalior; Dr. Shahid Jameel, CEO, Welcome Trust and DBT India Alliance and recipient of Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award and Prof. Tariq Mansoor, Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, AMU.

The meeting of the University Court will be held on February 4, 2017 at 11 am at the NRSC Club, AMU, Aligarh to recommend a panel of at least three persons out of which one person shall be appointed by the President of India in his capacity as the Visitor of the University.

The meeting of the Executive Council, which was held in a very cordial atmosphere, was attended by Prof. Habuiburrahman, Honorary Treasurer, Prof. A. M. Pathan, Bengluru, Mr. Ameer Ahmed, Mr. M. AMU observes two minute silence on Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary

Aligarh, January 31: The Aligarh Muslim University paid homage to father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi by observing ‘two minutes of silence’ with due solemnity in a befitting manner.  

All departments, faculties and offices associated with the University observed ‘two minutes of silence at 11:00 am today in order to ensure greater awareness of importance of this occasion among the students in the university and to instill in them a sense of National Integration and commitment to common goals and ideas.

The University siren was sounded a few seconds before 11:00 am to indicate the commencement of period of silence, during which all work was suspended and everyone in the University stood in silence until the siren sounded again at 11:02 am.

Meanwhile, speeches and talks connected with the significance of the Day, particularly mentioning the role of freedom fighters took place in morning assemblies of the University schools. Cultural programmes, exhibitions and other activities with the theme of National Freedom Movement, film shows on Freedom Movement and National Integration and on the lives of important freedom fighters were also arranged by the Cultural Education Centre of the University.

AMU starts circulation of forms for school admissions

Aligarh, January 31: The Directorate of School Education, Aligarh Muslim University has started the circulation of admission forms for the classes I, VI and IX of the University associated schools. The forms have been uploaded on the University website.

While the online submission of application forms will be allowed till 17.2.2017, the window submission of application forms (hard copy) will be allowed till 18.2.2017. The receipts of the application forms through post will be received till 23.2.2017.

Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming conclude at AMU

Aligarh, January 31: “When Razia Sultan could do wonders and become the only female ever to rule the Delhi Sultanate several centuries back, then the girl students of AMU too can repeat the history” said Brig S Ahmad Ali (Veteran), Pro Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University. He was addressing the concluding function of the four days long workshop on ‘Gender Mainstreaming’, organized jointly by Center for Women’s Studies, AMU and Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Regional Center (RGNIYD-RC), Chandigarh in accordance with Gender Champion’s Scheme of University Grants Commission (UGC) under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India.

Brig Ali said that the girl students of AMU are fortunate enough to contribute a major portion of the undergraduate female population of India. He complimented that women are mentally and biologically stronger than men while suggesting the girl students to participate in maximum number of cultural as well as literary activities. Brig Ali also cited examples of Ms Indira Gandhi and Ms Kalpana Chawla who brought laurels for the country and have emerged as a role model for the Indian women. He said that time is evident of Indian women prospering in all walks of life and immensely contributing to nation building. Brig Ali, asked the girl students to build up their confidence and step out in order to show their worth and to mobilize others in their family and community to acquire education as it is the key to success.

Mr Stanzin Dawa, Regional Director, RGNIYD-RC discussed how to be a good leader. He said that since contemporary times leadership skills have always remained of due importance for any program to succeed. Mr Dawa urged the students to enhance their communication skills as these are an indispensible part of personality. He said that one should have a positive attitude and a clear vision towards life.

Prof Nighat Ahmad, Director, Center for Women’s Studies and the Convenor of the workshop said that the efforts of the teachers and students of AMU as well those of the members of the RGNIYD-RC have finally shown their worth with the success of the workshop. 

The program was conducted by Dr Parveen Farooqui, Department of Mechnaical engineering while the Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof Shehroz Rizvi , Deputy Director, Center for Women’s Studies and the Co-Convenor of the workshop. The winner students of Student Leadership Programme, organized as part of the workshop, were also felicitated during the function. At least 55 students participated in the workshop.

Prior to this, various interactive activities on equality-equity, social construction of Gender, Gender roles/ pressure, Sex, Sexuality and Self-recognition, Patriarchy/Matriarchy/Equality, Experiences of health/ill-health in relation to one’s gender, etc. were also organized as part of the workshop which were compeered by Ms Akanksha Sharma and Ms Hina Mishra, members of RGNIYD-RC team.

Dr Huma Hasan, Assistant Professor, Center for Women’s Studies played an important role in conducting the workshop.

Dr Salma Shaheen, Principal, University Women’s Polytechnic and the Co-Convenor of the Workshop was also present during the occasion.

AMU’s IEEE Branch gets Best Students Branch Award.

ALIGARH January 21: The IEEE Students branch of Z.H. College of Engineering and Technology, Aligarh Muslim University has been awarded ‘The Best Students Branch’ of the UP section for 2016.

Prof M M Sufiyan Beg, Principal, Z.H. College of Engineering has congratulated students for their excellent performance. Prof Beg also congratulated IEEE Branch Counselor Dr Rihan for his able leadership and hard work. 

New oxygen manifold unit inaugurated

ALIGARH, January 21: Recently established Oxygen Manifold Unit has been inaugurated at the J. N. Medical College Hospital, Aligarh Muslim University.

Dr Obaid A Siddiqui, DMS, Gas Plant informed that the manifold unit, which is an  extension of central gas plant at JNMC, will provide 24 hours Oxygen supply to the critically ill patients of Respiratory Disease Ward, Critical Care Ward and Cardiac Care Unit. He hoped that the manifold unit would prove to be helpful in improving patient care in the concerned units.

The inauguration program was attended by Prof. Tariq Mansoor, Principal and CMS, JNMC, Prof Harris Manzoor, Medical Superintendent, Prof Mohd Shamim, Chairperson, Department of TB and Respiratory Diseases and Mr Akram, Caretaker.

 

AMU To organize a three-day International Conference On Theatre

ALIGARH, January 21: The Cultural Education Center (CEC) of the Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with the Indian Society of Theatre Research (ISTR), the Indian Chapter of International Federation for Theatre Research, is organizing the three-day "XIII International Conference of Indian Society for Theatre Research" from January 23-25, 2017 on "Travelling Performances and Theatre Cultures: Asserting the Praxis, Paradigms and Perspectives".

Dr Vibha Sharma, Organizing Secretary of the conference said that this congregation will bring together esteemed individuals in the field of theatre from all over the world presenting a comprehensive overview of the rapidly expanding nuances and subtleties in the world of dramatics.

She informed that Shri MK Raina, a renowned theatre personality who has a long association with the National School of Drama, will grace the occasion as Chief Guest while Prof David Whitton from Lancaster University, United Kingdom, Prof Boris Daussa Pastor, Intitut de teater, Barcelona, Spain and AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor Brig S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) will be the Guests of Honor. The inaugural session is set to commence with the welcome address and introductory remarks by Professor FS Sherani and Dr Vibha Sharma respectively who have been putting in their efforts to make the conference a success.

Dr Vibha Sharma further informed that Prof Dattareya Dutt, will deliver the keynote speech. She said that more than a hundred participants from all over the country, belonging to universities like JNU, DU, Kolkata University, Ambedkar University, Rajasthan University, Vardha University, Lovely Professional University etc, would be participating in the International conference, which will have three Plenary Sessions, nine Panels and ten Forums.

Apart from the indelible addresses, the assemblage will be witness to Chau performance by a troupe from Jharkhand, Jatra performance by a Delhiite group and a plausible nautanki based on Heer Ranjha by the Drama Club of AMU.

Dept of Political Science mourns Dr Muhammad Hashim Kidwai’s sad demise

Aligarh, January 14: The teachers, staff and students associated with the Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University organised a condolence meeting to mourn the sad demise of former AMU academic and Rajya Sabha Member, Dr Muhammad Hashim Kidwai, who had recently passed away at a New Delhi hospital after a brief illness.

Dr Kidwai joined AMU as a lecturer in 1948 and was promoted to the position of a reader in 1961. He retired from his services in 1982. The deceased is survived by three daughters and two sons.

AMU EC to recommend panel for new Vice Chancellor’s appointment

Aligarh, January 14: A special meeting of the Aligarh Muslim University’s Executive Council (EC) will take place on January 28, 2017 to recommend the University Court, a panel of five names for the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor under the concerned Statutes of the University.  AMU Registrar, Professor Javaid Akhtar informed that the meeting will be held at the Administrative block from 10:30 on Jan 28.

Meanwhile, a special meeting of the University Court will follow on February 4, 2017 from 11: 00 am onwards at the NRSC Club, AMU to consider a panel of five names to be recommended by the EC.

Former Personal Secretary, AMU VC Office, Mr Kafi passes away

Aligarh, January 16: Mr M A Kafi, former Personal Secretary attached with the Aligarh Muslim University’s Vice Chancellor Office passed away after brief illness. Mr Kafi, who was buried at the University Graveyard after the last rites had retired from his University services in 1998.

The deceased is survived by wife, three daughters and son.

Islamic University of Maldives Chancellor visits AMU

Aligarh, January 16: Dr Mohammad Shaheem Ali Saeed, Chancellor, Islamic University of Maldives on a visit to Aligarh Muslim University, met the AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) to discuss student exchange programmes in between Islamic University of Maldives and Aligarh Muslim University.

During the meeting, the AMU Pro Vice Chancellor and Islamic University of Maldives Chancellor also discussed strengthening India-Maldives relations through student exchange programmes.

After the meeting, Dr Shaheem visited the Maulana Azad library, where he was shown rare manuscripts and ancient scriptures along with the modern books, important research papers in different sections of the AMU Library.

Dr Shaheem also visited the Department of Islamic Studies and Research, where he interacted with students while seeing rare collections of Islamic Scriptures. During interaction with students and scholars, Dr Shameem urged them to study for serving the Ummah (Islamic Community) and the world in the best ways. He also replied to queries of students related with issues concerning the Muslim World.

JNMC Centre of Cardiology to start attending arrhythmias cases and conduct electrophysiological study and radiofrequency ablation

Aligarh, January 17: The Centre of Cardiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University will soon start attending cases of arrhythmias and conduct electrophysiological study and radiofrequency ablation on patients suffering with syncope and palpitations. These cases will be attended in the OPDs of the New Block.

While announcing the upcoming facilities in the Centre of Cardiology, Professor Asif Hasan, Director, Centre of Cardiology has appreciated the efforts of Dr M Rafi Anwar saying that Dr Anwar is great asset to the Centre.

The announcement of new facilities by Professor Hasan has come a few days after the newly established Catheterisation Lab (Cath Lab) in the Centre of Cardiology became operational. Since the inaugural of the Cath Lab, team of doctors under the guidance of Professor Hasan have been successfully conducting routine angiographies, angioplasties, cath studies, radial angiography and pacemaker cases.

Azerbaijan Ambassador visits AMU

Aligarh, January 17: His Excellency, Mr Ibrahim Asad Oglu Hajiyev, Ambassador, Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, New Delhi visited the Aligarh Muslim University and met the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) and other officials of the University for fostering and strengthening cultural relations and mutual understanding with AMU.

While addressing the AMU faculty members at an interactive meeting, Mr Hajiyev said that Azerbaijan shares a history of cultural, educational and economic relations with India and it is imperative that the bond of these relations should be eternalize.

He assured that steps will be taken to provide training to AMU’s Petro-Chemical Engineering students in the Petroleum Sector of Azerbaijan.

Mr Hajiyev pointed out that since Azerbaijan has an almost equal ratio of women and men in the country’s population, there is an equal space of working women with men in Azerbaijan.  

During his welcome speech, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor said that Mr Hajiyev’s visit will open new doors of educational cooperation and exchange programmes and it is hoped that AMU and Azerbaijan will come closer.

Brigadier Ali also presented a memento to Mr Hajiyev on the occasion.  

Later in the day, Mr Hajiyev, accompanied by AMU Public Relations Officer, Mr Omar Saleem Peerzada, visited historical buildings of the University including Musa Dakri Museum, Sir Syed House, K A Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies, Department of Botany and the Maulana Azad Library, where he was shown rare manuscripts.

AMU Finance Officer, Prof S M Jawed Akhtar; Proctor, Prof M Mohsin Khan; Controller, Prof Yusuf Uzzaman Khan; Deans of various faculties and Chairpersons of the University departments were also present on the occasion.

JNMC Library hosts Medical and Allied Sciences books exhibition

Aligarh, January 18: Aligarh Muslim University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) Library is hosting an exhibition of Medical and Allied Sciences books associated with the Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers, New Delhi. The exhibition, which will conclude on January 20, 2017 was inaugurated by Professor Tariq Mansoor, Principal, JNMC and Dr Nabi Hasan, AMU Librarian.   

While inaugurating the exhibition Prof Tariq Mansoor explained the importance of the book exhibition in medical and dental sciences. He said that there has always been a need of updating knowledge in each specialty from time to time and the value of printed media cannot be over ruled out in this present era of ICT.

He added that the exhibition at the college premises is the best opportunity not only for the faculty but also for students to acquire latest books in their specialties.

Meanwhile, the Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof M Amanullah Khan appreciated the efforts of the college management for the arranging all this necessary for organising the exhibition. He added that he was very happy to see the variety of collections in each medical specialty from various national and international medical publishers. 

While highlighting the importance of book exhibitions, Dr Nabi Hasan said that book exhibitions are the best place for students to purchase books at the maximum discount. He appreciated the concerted efforts of the JNMC Principal in organizing this exhibition.

On the occasion, Dr Amir Usmani, Hony Library Officer said that even in countries like US, book exhibitions are organized to facilitate the procurement of books not only by the library or faculty but also for the under graduate students. He thanked Prof Tariq Mansoor and staff of the Maualana Azad Library and JNMC Library.

AMU Researchers awarded at IIM Ahmedabad Conference

Aligarh, January 18: Aligarh Muslim University researchers associated with the Department of Business Administration were recently awarded the ‘Labdhi Bhandari Memorial Award for Third Best Paper’ held at the 7^th International Conference on Marketing in Emerging Economics at IIM, Ahmedabad. 

AMU researchers Mr Obaidur Rahman (Research Scholar), Mr Asad Ahmad (UGC-SRF Research Scholar) and

Dr Mohammed Naved Khan (Associate Professor, AMU) were awarded for their paper titled ‘Developing a Hedonic E-Service Quality Scale: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Approach’.

These researchers have developed a scale for measuring utilitarian as well as the hedonic values of e-service quality and identified three critical dimensions, namely the Customer Service, e-Trust and Web Hedonism.

The paper study offers practical suggestions to the online retailers for formulating better marketing strategies and thus gaining a competitive edge.

The conference received around 400 research papers from 17 countries. It is a rare achievement that out of 81 papers accepted for presentation in the prestigious conference, five papers were authored by researchers from the Department of Business Administration, AMU, who are pursuing their doctoral work under Dr Mohammed Naved Khan. These researchers are Mr Mohd Danish Kirmani, Mr Arham Adnan, Ms Sheetal Jain and Ms Ruby Dua Bhatia.  

Dept of Geology, AMU to start Outreach Programme

Aligarh, January 18: Aligarh Muslim University’s Department of Geology will organise the 19^th IIRS Outreach Programme on ‘Remote Sensing and GIS Applications in Carbon Forestry’. The programme, which will begin from February 16, 2017 will be organised in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO), Dehradun.

Undergraduate final year students, post-graduation students, scientific staff of university departments and faculties, researchers at universities and institutions are eligible to participate in the course.

Dr Rahila conferred with honorary degree

Aligarh, January 19: Dr Rahila Raees, Assistant Professor, Department of Hindi, Aligarh Muslim University has been conferred with the Hindi literature’s prestigious  honorary degree of ‘Sahitya Kusumakar’ by the Sahitya Mandal, Nathdwara, Rajasthan for her invaluable contribution in the field of story writing and national language Hindi.

Dr Rahila has received the honor at the two-day National Honorary function organized in fond memory of Bhavti Prasad Devpura by the Rajasthan Brijbhasha Academy, Jaipur and Sahitya Mandal, Nathdwara, Rajasthan. She has been presented with a recognition certificate, a pearl garland, shawl, turban and a picture of ShriNath ji as part of the honor. The honor is given to the emerging talents in the field of literature.

Dr Rahila’s stories, published in different prestigious journals, have gained wide recognition in the field of literature. Her articles and research papers have found place in different journals and editorial books. Stories, authored by Dr Rahila, have been translated in different languages.  

 

Prof Naeem develops unique medicine to cure diabetes

Aligarh, January 19: In a rare achievement, Professor Naeem Ahmad Khan associated with the Department of Ilmul Advia, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Aligarh Muslim University has developed a first of it’s kind medicine, which will cure diabetes by regenerating the primary function of beta islet cells to store and release insulin.

The unique Unani medicine, which will soon be in the clinical use as it has been passed by the Government of India’s Institutional Ethical Committee will regenerate the natural process, in which the pancreas of diabetic patients will have their beta cells responding quickly to spikes in blood concentrations by secreting some of their stored insulin in natural ways. 

Prof Naeem confirmed that the medicine has already been successfully tested on animals and soon it’s clinical use will start.

He informed that this medicine has been developed from eight different medicinal plants and it will be very affordable to common people. 

Prof Naeem further said that the medicine will have not only have a protective effect on pancreas but it will also enable the natural physiological function of pancreas in diabetic patients. “This medicine will also provide necessary nutrients to the organs, which in case of diabetic patients do not work properly,” said Prof Naeem.

He also pointed out that once this medicine is ready for clinical use, it will be given free to patients from lower strata of society.

Prof Naeem also said that since this medicine is an Evidence based medicine (EBM), it will be conscientious and explicit and will integrate clinical experience and patient values with the best available research information.

He has also thanked Professor Imrana Naseem, Department of Bio-Chemistry, AMU for the necessary contribution in the research leading to development of the medicine.

Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to start three-month self-finance observation based training program

Aligarh, January 19: The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Z A Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University will start a three-month self-finance observation based training program on ‘Clinical Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’ from February 1, 2017. BDS graduates from any institute recognised by the Dental Council of India are eligible to apply for the course.

Dr G S Hashmi, Chairperson, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery confirmed that there are only three seats available for the course and the selection of candidates will be based on first serve/waiting basis and the applications will only be accepted through mails on chairman.om@amu.ac.in. He also confirmed that January 25, 2017 is the last date for the submission of forms.

Ahmadi School to organize ‘Sir Syed Bi-Centenary National Cricket Tournament 2017’

Aligarh, January 19: Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged, Aligarh Msulim University is going to organize the ‘Sir Syed Bi-Centenary National Cricket Tournament 2017’ on 18^th and 19^th February at the Wellingdon Cricket Pavillion, AMU. Cricket teams of the Visually challenged persons from West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi will participate in the tournament.

Mrs Firdaus Rahman, Principal, Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged informed that the tournament, which will follow International rules for Blind Cricket, will comprise of 14 players in each team. She told that each team will have four players from B1 category, three from B2 category, and four from B3 category with one extra player from each category. There will be no entry fees for participation, Mrs Rahman added.   

Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to organise CME on Oral Cancer

Aligarh, January 20: The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Z A Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with International Academy of Oral Oncology will organise a CME on Oral Cancer on February 13, 2017.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) will be the Chief Patron of the CME while AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) will attend the programme as the Patron. Professor M Amanullah Khan, Dean, Faculty of Medicine will be the Co-Patron of the Programme. Prof Tariq Mansoor, Principal, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Prof R K Tiwari, Principal, Dr Z A Dental College will also be present on the occasion.

Dr Shadab M Rizvi is the Chairperson of the Reception Committee of the programme, while Dr Mohd Kalim ansari and Dr Tabish-ur-Rehman are the Transport Committee in-charge and Treasurer respectively.

Dr G S Hashmi, Chairperson, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery confirmed that the CME will have lectures by Professor Pankaj Chaturvedi, Unit Head, Head and Neck Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai; Prof Kumar Prabhas, Dr Nadimul Hoda and Dr Shahid Ali Siddiqui.

 President of India nominates AMU Executive Council Members

Aligarh, January 20: The Honourable President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as the visitor of the Aligarh Muslim University has nominated Professor Ram Rakshpal Singh, Head, Department of Botany, Dean Student’s Welfare, Chief Provost, Member, Executive Council, University of Lucknow; Professor Umesh Kadam, Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, JNU and Mr S M Khan, Press Registrar and Head of Department, Registrar of Newspaper of India as the members of the Executive Council, Aligarh Muslim University for a period of three years, with immediate effect.
