Department
of Cardio Thoracic Surgery team performs successful open heart surgery on
nine-year-old girl
Aligarh,
December 16: A team of surgeons from Jawaharlal Nehru College’s
Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery recently performed a successful open
heart surgery of a nine-year-old girl. The surgery was performed by the team
under Professor M H Beg, Chairman, Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery.
The patient, who is
a daughter of a University employee, had a defected heart with a hole since her
birth. The defect was operated with the PTFE PATCH procedure, during which the
patient’s heart and lungs functioned with the help of a machine for about 20
minutes. The patient has now recovered and will soon be discharged.
Prof Beg informed
that this was the second successful open heart surgery performed in JNMC. He
added that the surgery was done at a very nominal cost with an NGO also helping
the patient with finances.
The team, which performed the surgery included Associate
Prof, Dr Mohd Azam Haseen; Assistant Prof, Dr
Ehtesham Naqvi and Dr Manju Gupta from the Department of Cardio Thoracic
Surgery, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Anaesthesia team led by Dr Nadeem Raza
was also involved in the surgery.
JKAA
organizes colloquium on ‘Values in higher Education’
Aligarh,
December 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Alig Association (JKAA) recently
organized a colloquium on ‘Values in higher Education’ at the Conference Hall
of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University.
Professor Emeritus
Farhatullah Khan, who was the Key-note Speaker in the function, stressed that
all great institutions of higher learning stand for tolerance, freedom of
thought, speech and pluralism.
He said that we must
strive for knowledge by appropriating a conceptual framework within which
skills and values can be accommodated. Prof Khan quoted Sir Syed Ahmad Khan,
who equally stressed on cultivation of natural and religious sciences.
While presiding over
the function, Dr Mohsin Raza, well known philanthropist and surgeon stressed on
the application of values in socio, political, economic and cultural fields of
operation. He added that all research and knowledge is pointless unless it is
applied for wider welfare of the mankind.
During his address,
Prof Latif Hussain Shah Kazmi said that Knowledge is a trust and whosoever has
it should impart to others. He stressed on righteous living with a view to
achieve higher levels of probity, honesty and goodness.
Meanwhile, Prof
Siraj Ajmali outlined that there is immense need to revive human values and AMU
can be a good platform for this.
Dr Mushtaq Ahmad
Zargar in his presentation underlined the need for cultivation of values in
higher education by recourse to moral values.
Dr Mohibul Haque
stressed on use of educational methods in cultivation and protection of human
values, which is critical for safeguarding value system in our society.
JKAA Patron and
programme organizer, Dr Manzoor Ahmad expressed satisfaction over successful
completion of this colloquium.
Ms Ummaiya Farooq and Mr Tahir Ahmad conducted the
programme, while Mr Nasar Ahmad Shah, Secretary, JKAA, Aligarh Chapter proposed

AMU
to organize Chrysanthemum, Colesus and Rose Show-2016
Aligarh, December
16:
Aligarh Muslim University will organize the Chrysanthemum, Colesus and Rose
Show-2016 on December 13 and 14, 2016. AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer
Uddin Shah (Veteran) will inaugurate the Show, while Pro Vice Chancellor,
Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) will distribute prizes during the conclusion of
the programme.
The
Show is open for participation for all local institutions, schools, colleges,
clubs, societies and individuals. “Those who desire to participate are
requested to send their entries to the Convener, Gulistan-e-Syed between 8:00
am to 5:00 pm on December 12, 2016,” said Convener of the Show, Mr Shahabuddin
Khan adding that those, who are interested to participate in the cut flowers
category should register their entries between 7:00 am to 8:00 am on December
13, 2016.
The Chrysanthemum, Colesus and Rose Show-2016 will be
open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on December 13, 2016 and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on
December 14, 2016.
Dept
of Sunni Theology organises Workshop on ‘The status of Aimmah-e-Masajid and
their Responsibilities’
Aligarh,
December 16: The Department of Sunni Theology, Aligarh Muslim
University recently organised a Workshop on ‘The status of Aimmah-e-Masajid and
their Responsibilities’ at the Central Hall of the Faculty of Theology.
While attending the
inaugural function of the programme as the Chief Guest, Professor Masood Ahmad
said that the role of a Mosque’s Imam besides leading the congregational
prayers is also to serve as a member of the larger leadership team in a Muslim
community. He added that the Imam's counselling may be sought in personal and
religious.
“The imam may be
involved in visiting the sick, engaging in inter-faith service programs,
officiating marriages, organizing educational gatherings in the Mosque and
educating and reforming the youth,” said Prof Ahmad.
Professor Abdur
Raheem Kidwai, who also attended the function as the Chief Guest pointed out
how growing numbers of Mosques in Europe and USA are contributing to their
societies by integrating people from diverse backgrounds while providing a
common platform for discussing issues.
He added that the
Mosques and Imams in the western countries are talking about creating societies
with more openness, more religious and racial tolerance, and equal treatment of
all religious communities.
While presiding over
the function, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) said
that he recently read the last sermon of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him),
in which the Holy Prophet has urged Muslims not to be divided in sects and
asked them to have societies with equal rights for men and women and to stay
away from usury. He added that it is imperative for Muslims to not have
differences within themselves and to contribute to their societies in the best
possible ways.
The Vice Chancellor
in the conclusion of his address also promised that the coming financial year
will have a special focus on the University’s Department of Theology.
AMU Registrar, Prof
Javaid Akhtar threw light on how Mosques contribute in the betterment of
society. He said that Islam prompted mankind to learn and thus, from the
beginning of Islamic history, the ‘Islamic Mosque’ became the centre of
learning.
He also pointed out
that since mosques are suppose to spread learning in society, the Imam’s should
be instrumental in bringing reforms. He also said that world, still looks up to
mosques and Imam’s to contribute for the betterment.
Meanwhile, Professor
Abdul Khaliq, Dean, Faculty of Theology said that there is no doubt that Imam’s
and mosques have important roles to play in societies, but at the same time it
is the duty of every individual to represent religion in the best ways by
simply becoming honest, truthful, pious, rational and tolerant. He added that
if these qualities and imbibed in a society there will be no injustice and no
corruption.
While welcoming the
guests at the function, Prof Tauqeer Alam also talked about the importance of
offering Salah. He pointed out that Salah is the one of the five pillars of Islam
and Muslims should not avoid it.
Dr Mohd Nasir
conducted the programme, which was attended by teachers, students and scholars
from various departments and faculties.
AMU
starts two-day Chrysanthemum, Colesus and Rose Show-2016
Aligarh,
December 16: AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah
(Veteran) with his wife Mrs Sabiha Seemi Shah today inaugurated the two-day
Chrysanthemum, Colesus and Rose Show-2016, in which a total 900 entries were
presented at the Gulistan-e-Syed.
The show included
entries of 47 different kinds of roses, 68 various flower arrangements by
ladies, children and gardeners, 284 varieties of Coleus, 252 kinds of
Chrysanthemums single and double and Dousles and 249 Ornamentals,
Bougainvilleues, Succulents, Bonsai and Cacti.
During the
programme, the Vice Chancellor appreciated the work done by the Department of
Land and Gardens in organising the Show.
On the occasion,
Registar, Javaid Akhtar; Finance Officer, Prof S M Jawaid Akhtar; MIC Land and
Garden, Prof Parvaiz Qamar Rizvi; Proctor, Prof M Mohsin Khan; Principla JNMC,
Prof Tariq Mansoor and Convener of the Show, Mr Shahabuddin Khan and many other

AMU
organises Serat Exhibition and ‘Jalse-e-Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi’
Aligarh,
December 16: Aligarh Muslim University recently organised an
exhibition of books and specimens of Quranic Calligraphy on Prophet Muhammad
(Peace be Upon Him) at the Central Hall of the University’s Maulana Azad
Library, which was inaugurated by AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin
Shah (Veteran) followed by the main function of ‘Jalse-e-Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi’
at the Kennedy Hall Auditorium.
More than 608 books
in Urdu, English, Arabic, Persian and Telegu on the life the Holy Prophet (PBUH)
were on display during the exhibition at the AMU Library, while 50 rare
manuscripts including a manuscript of the Holy Quran transcribed by Hadhrat Ali
(RA) written in parchment in Kufi Script were also on display. The exhibition
also had ‘Halnama’ of Beyazid Ansari, a copy of Nahjul-Balagha of Hadhrat Ali
and a Kurta with the inscription of Holy Quran worn by warriors of Mughal
emperors was also on display.
Meanwhile, the K A
Nizami Quranic Centre, AMU also displayed calligraphic arts comprising 100 posters
in the Serat Exhibition. The University Librarian, Dr Nabi Ahmad and Professor
K A Nizami, Director, Quranic Centre also graced the occasion.
Meanwhile, Maulana
Tahir Madni from Azamgarh and Maulana Syed Ahmad Ali from Mumbai addressed the
‘Jalse-e-Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi’ at the Kennedy Hall.
Maulana Tahir
pointed out that Islam is a religion for the whole of mankind and is not
restricted to particular communities. He added that the life of Prophet
Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is a source of guidance and inspiration for the
whole humanity.
Maulana Syed Ali
pointed out that Islam lays special stress on learning and etiquettes. He added
that it is imperative in today’s world for followers of Islam and other
communities to have the best in education. He further said that Islam gives
peaceful ways of solving all conflicts without any blood-shed.
Presiding over the
function, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah urged people to
follow all things from good tidings of the All-Mighty and avoid wrong-doings.
Professor Abdul
Khaliq, Dean, Faculty of Theology delivered the welcome address while AMU
Registrar, Prof Javaid Akhtar proposed the thanks. Prof Tauqeer Alam conducted
the programme.

Prof
S P Singh delivers lecture in AMU
Aligarh,
December 16: Prof S P Singh, Head, Department of Humanities and
Social Sciences, IIT Roorkee recently delivered a lecture as a resource person
during the on-going Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD)
sponsored two-week winter course on ‘Rural Planning and Management: Application
of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System’ at the Department
of Economics, Aligarh Muslim University.
Speaking on ‘Diversification
of rural economy; non farm sector, rural industrialization and rural services’,
Prof Singh discussed challenges to rural development and developing synergies
between agriculture modernization and diversification of rural economy.
He emphasized on
activities like innovation in rural tourism, services, renewable and green
economy as tools of creating rural livelihood.
Prof Singh mentioned
that rural youth in India is abandoning farming and this trend will drive
diversification of rural economy and farm mechanization.
He highlighted that the
majority of rural house-holds are engaged in construction activities. “Thus the
government's focus should be in developing more regular kind of activities in
manufacturing, wholesale, retail trade services, transport, communication and
financial services,” said Prof Singh.
He pointed out that
India needs region specific and sector specific policy interventions.
“We need huge
investment in infrastructure, education, health, power, agriculture, water and
research and development,” further pointed out Prof Singh.
Speaking on the demonetization
and cashless economy campaign of the government, Prof Singh said that the whole
economy is going down and there is a huge amount of wastage of hours by
standing in bank and ATM queues.

Pro Vice Chancellor visits Kishanganj Centre
Aligarh,
December 16: Aligarh Muslim University Pro Vice Chancellor,
Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) and Professor Suhail Sabir, Chairperson, Alumni
Affairs Committee recently visited AMU’s Kishanganj Centre.
On the occasion, the
Pro Vice Chancellor assured that all necessary efforts are being made by AMU
administration to bring in funds released for Kishanganj Centre at the
earliest.
While interacting
with the students, faculty members and the non-teaching staff at the Academic
Block of the Centre, he stressed the need to re-strengthen the process of
institution building while bringing the Kishanganj Centre to vibrancy.
Brigadier Ali with
Prof Sabir and Mr Khan Amadur Rahman also visited the proposed site for
construction of AMU Kishanganj Centre at Chakla in Kishanganj, where they
inspected the boundary wall, damaged during floods. Meanwhile Mr Amadur Rahman surveyed
the site for the preparation of the master plan of Kishanganj Centre.

Aligarh,
December 16: India’s leading NGO, Piramal Education Foundation, which
has signed MOU with Department of Social work, Aligarh Muslim University for

Vice Chancellor lays foundation of 1.5 mw
Roof Top Solar Power Plant at AMU Library
Aligarh, December 16: Aligarh
Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) laid the foundation stone of 1.5 mw Roof Top Solar Power Plant at the Maulana
Azad Library’s New Building during the observation of ‘National Energy
Conservation Day-2016’. The programme was organised by the Department of
Electricity, AMU in collaboration with IEEE Students Branch, Zakir Hussain
College of Engineering and Technology.
On the
occasion, the Vice Chancellor said that with the growing demand of energy, the
electricity consumption is increasing rapidly. He added that in this situation,
it is imperative to think about implementing ways for energy conservation.
Gen Shah
pointed out that solar power is one of the most effective ways to conserve
energy and AMU has taken a lead by taking the initiatives for saving energy. He
also pointed out that AMU is continuously doing research and on re-cycling
waste water and nanotechnology. While laying the foundation of the plant, the
Vice Chancellor promised that these plants will soon start at other university
buildings too.
AMU Pro
Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali said that AMU pays yearly bills of over
25 crore Rupees for electricity and with the installation of these new plants,
it is expected the bills will be reduced.
He also informed that this plant will be operational in March, 2017.
Brigadier
Ali also pointed out that since AMU library consumes the most electricity in
all the University buildings, this new plant will be a big relief in terms of
electricity consumption.
Mr B S
Gangwar, Chief Engineer, DVVNL, Aligarh Zone said that electricity is one of
the most important and essential things for livelihood. He added that with
increase in population, rapid urbanisation and industrialization; the energy
conservation is becoming a big challenge for the country.
He also
pointed that even though the successive governments for the past few decades
have been working on energy conservation, but it continues to remain a big
challenge. Mr Gangwar pointed out that AMU’s research on solar energy will be
of greater significance for the country as it is a source of energy, which can
last forever.
Dr
Mohammad Rihan, MIC, Electricity Department informed that the roof top plant
and another ground mounted plant of 3MW capacity will eventually become one of
the largest non-commercial installations and the largest in any academic
institute in the country.
Dr Rihan
also conducted the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.
Dr Mohammad Ali Raza Khan delivers ‘Dr Salim
Ali Memorial Lecture’ in AMU
Aligarh, December 16: Dr
Mohammad Ali Raza Khan, Dubai based Principal Wildlife Specialist recently delivered
the ‘Dr Salim Ali Memorial Lecture’ in the Aligarh Muslim University. The
lecture was organised by Department of Wildlife Sciences, AMU.
While
speaking on the topic of ‘Ecology and Conservation of Black and Orange
Flycatcher in Nilgiri Hills, India’, Dr Khan shared his experience of working
with the great Birdman of India, Dr Salim Ali and how Dr Ali urged him to
pursue a doctorate degree. Meanwhile, he also spoke on the currently
under-construction Dubai Safari in UAE.
Dr Khan
pointed out that Dr Salim had no university degree, but there were eight
scholars including Dr Khan, who completed their doctorates under Dr Salim Ali.
“Dr Salim Ali had a vision in 1930s and 1940s
that other people did not have at the time,” said Dr Khan adding that the great
Birdman was the first Indian Ornithologist, who could think beyond collecting,
preserving, shelving and cataloguing specimens.
Dr Khan
further said that Dr Salim Ali was the first to start noting the ecology and
behavior of birds, which was later, published in the ‘Book of Indian Birds’ in
1939.
Dr Khan
also recalled of developing a project proposal on the Black and Orange
Flycatcher after which Dr Salim Ali asked him to report to Mr E R C Davidar,
who had last seen the bird in Coonoor in Nilgiris. “It was at this time that I
discovered that the Flycatcher lived in dark undergrowth of Shola-type
evergreen forest and some public parks like Sim’s Park, Ooty Botanical Gardens
and certain areas in the Kodaikanal town,” said Dr Khan.
While
presiding over the lecture, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah
(Veteran) recalled meeting Dr Salim Ali in Ladakh during one of his postings.
“I found out that Dr Salim Ali was committed to his field and it was amazing to
see his work,” said General Shah.
He added
that it is interesting to notice the migration of birds as seems like a miracle
that birds exactly remember all the places they have stayed. Gen Shah said that
humans might forget the locations of places but birds never fail to do so.
Appreciating
Dr Khan’s lecture, the Vice Chancellor said that today’s lecture was very
informative and it will help students and faculties in their further
researches.
Professor
S H A Yahya, Chairperson, Department of Wildlife Sciences delivered the welcome
address to introduce the Chief Guest. During the lecture, he pointed out that
Sheikha Jheel in Aligarh has a big strength of migratory birds from various
parts of the world.

Ilyas conducted the programme while Prof Syed Asif Akhtar Naqvi, Dean, Faculty
of Life Sciences proposed the vote of thanks.
JNMC
starts ‘Paediatric Cardiology Services’
Aligarh,
December 16: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College’s Centre of Cardiology
recently started the ‘Paediatric Cardiology Services’ with the first
catheterisation case study done in a case of congenital heart disease or the
artrial septal defect.
Professor Asif
Hasan, Director, Centre of Cardiology, who had recently attended the
Cardiological Society of India Conference held at Kochi informed that there are
future plans of coronary interventions with aims to cover full spectrum of
interventional services in JNMC.
He further said that
Prof MU Rabbani and Dr Rafi Anwar had been of immense help to promote the concept
of advanced Cath Lab services in JNMC and Dr Shaad Abqari has been a great
support in ‘Paediatric Cardiology Services.’
JNMC
conducts first Invasive Brain Angiography
Aligarh,
December 16: In yet another achievement, Aligarh Muslim University’s
Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) recently conducted the first Invasive
Brain Angiography. The procedure, done on a 10-year-old boy was performed by Dr
Asmat Ali under the supervision of Professor M F Huda, Head, Department of
Neurosurgery.
Dr Ali is highly
trained in Invasive Interventional Neurosurgery and has done his Mch in
neurosurgery from the G B Pant Hospital, New Delhi.
The patient on whom
the surgery was done was diagnosed with brain tumour after a C T Scan. Brain
angiography is technically a difficult procedure, which is done in selected
centres in North India. Besides AMU’s JNMC, the procedure is done at SG PGI
Lucknow, AIIMS and GB Panth. “The procedure, which costs around 40-50 thousand
Rupees was done free of cost to the patient in JNMC,” confirmed the Hospital
officials.

class XII student wins Inter School Speech Competition
Aligarh,
December 16: Syed Hamid Senior Secondary School (Boys) Class XII
student, Nishant Bhardawaj has won the first prize in Inter School Speech
Competition organised by Al-Barkat Educational Institution Seerat Committee.
The Competition had participants from 22 different schools.
While congratulating
Nishant Bhardawaj for winning the competition, Major S M Mustafa, Principal, Sr
Secondary School (Boys) urged other students of school to also participate in
these competitions.

Prof
Nawab Ali Khan delivers Key-note address at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University
Aligarh,
December 16: Professor Nawab Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Commerce,
Aligarh Muslim University recently delivered a Key-note address and chaired a
technical session at a National Seminar on ‘Innovations in Banking Sector:
Opportunities and Challenges’ at the School of Management Studies and Social
Sciences, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir.
During his address,
Prof Khan said that with the use of information technology as a corollary of
the liberalization process, the banking sector in India has undergone a huge
transformation.
“Most of the banks
have begun to take an innovative approach towards banking with the objective of
creating more value for customers,” said Prof Khan adding that now banks should
lay greater emphasis on professionalism, diversification, sources of
non-interest income and consultancy services.
He also suggested
that the banks should make necessary changes in the legal stipulations, cost
management and bench marking of service standards to improve productivity and
proficiency.

of Land and Gardens concludes ‘Chrysanthemum, Coleus and Rose Show-2016’
Aligarh,
December 16: The Department of Land and Gardens, Aligarh Muslim
University recently concluded the ‘Chrysanthemum, Coleus and Rose Show-2016’,
in which AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) distributed
prizes to the winners. The show was held at University’s Gulistan-e-Syed.
Around 44
participants were awarded the first place, with a case prize of Rs 11000. The
second place with a cash prize of Rs 7, 500 was given to 50 candidates, while
63 participants were given consolation prizes, with Rs 6, 300 cash prize.
While congratulating
the winners, AMU Pro Vice Chancellor said that the participants, who missed
winning the prizes, should not be disheartened as there will be opportunities
in the next year’s Show.
