‘Role of Students in Globalisation’ in AMU
Aligarh, April 22: As a part of the
on-going Sir Syed Bicentenary Celebrations in Aligarh Muslim University, Mr
Pankaj Pachauri, a renowned news television personality and former
Communications Advisor to the Prime Minister Office today delivered a special
talk on ‘Role of Students in Globalisation’. The programme was held at the Conference
Hall of the University Polytechnic.
Addressing
a gathering filled to the brim with journalists, academicians, scholars,
students and delegates, Mr Pachauri said that the real globalisation is the
state of mind which needs to stay modern. He pointed out that AMU founder was a
globalised and modern person at a time, when there were no written theories on
globalisation.
“Sir
Syed wanted to build an educational institute of higher learning, where
scientific education and temper could bring common Indians in the mainstream of
the world and his ideas and thoughts should be re-visited in contemporary
times,” said Mr Pachauri.
Recollecting
memories of the days, when the world was moving into a new millennium; Mr
Pachauri said, “I remember during the last days of 1999, the world feared that
the Y2K bug was a computer flaw, or bug, that may cause problems when dealing
with dates beyond December 31, 1999.” He added that the flaw, faced by computer
programmers and users all over the world was solved by Indian computer engineers
sitting in Bangalore, Hyderabad, San Francisco and New York and this is just
one example of India’s role in globalisation.
Talking
about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), Mr Pachauri said that it is one of
the best examples of globalisation as it is aimed at unlimited participation and
open access via the web. He elaborated that in addition to traditional course
materials such as filmed lectures, readings, and problem sets, many MOOCs
provide interactive user forums to support community interactions among
students, professors and teaching assistants. “Students today need to make time
out of their busy schedules to do MOOC courses from the best centres of
learning and Ivy League universities sitting in their home towns,” said Mr
Pachauri.
Talking
on the growing radicalisation in the world, Mr Pachari said that the problem of
some in society becoming radicalised should be tackled by employment, education
and building relationships with those at risk. He further said that the socio-economic
context of people should be taken into consideration and more and more
employment opportunities should be provided to the youth to avoid
radicalisation.
He
also said that he is glad that the Home Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh has said
that there is a big contribution to the Indian economy from the Kashmiri youth
and people living in various parts of India should look at Kashmiris with this
perspective.
Mr
Pachauri also urged people not to follow certain anti-globalisation world
leaders, who are trying to divide the world by building walls across borders
and by stopping immigrations from certain countries.
AMU
Vice Chancellor, Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran), who was also the Chief
Patron of the programme said that globalisation is imperative and we cannot
live without it.
He
added that students should be engines of globalisation and they should drive
globalisation to make the world a better place.
General
Shah pointed out that AMU has Memorandums of Understandings with some of the
best universities in the world and with the student exchange programmes, AMU is
trying to send some of the best students to study abroad in fully funded
scholarship programmes.
He
urged students to learn and master the global language of computers and
Information Technology to excel in a truly global way. General Shah further
urged students to concentrate on important things and promote patriotism to
change perceptions of the world.
General
Shah also pointed out that he has been an admirer of Mr Pachauri’s work and
views and always wishes him success for all his future endeavours. He also
felicitated Mr Pachauri with a memento during the programme.
During
the welcome address, AMU Public Relations Officer, Mr Omar S Peerzada said that
today a look at the beautiful AMU campus can make one realise that Sir Syed’s
dream of establishing a world class educational institution; an institute of
higher learning that would mold and guide future generations of enlightened
minds has been fulfilled.
He
added that today’s lecture is special and the speaker even more special. “Mr
Pankaj Pachauri may have taken a break from the 24/7 news channels, but his
news shows are still remembered. His news shows have remained on the top of the
prime time news charts and highest rated of all time shows in the history of
Indian electronic media,” said Mr Peerzada.
While
proposing the vote of thanks, Professor A R Kidwai, Chairman, Bicentenary

Professor Rohini delivers lecture in AMU
Aligarh, April 24: Noted Hindi writer, Professor Rohini Agarwal today delivered a lecture
organised by the Shodh Samiti (Research Committe) of the Department of Hindi,
Aligarh Muslim University. She was speaking on the topic of ‘Tradition,
Modernity and Hindi Fiction—Women’s Perspective’.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Rohini said that
women writers in Hindi Literature carved out their own spaces in order to
address issues such as marriage, divorce, sexuality, and women's education,
that is, issues that directly affect women's lives.
She added that women writers in Hindi Literature
when confronted with problems, interrogated in their writings the cultural
traditions and the modern uses of patriarchal power in independent India. “Many
of these women have challenged the power structures that assign them
sub-ordinate positions even while keeping some of the traditions intact,” said
Professor Rohini adding that these writers have discussed their frustrations
and humiliations stemming from social problems that affect their daily lives.
Giving examples of women writers like Sundari Devi
in Jane Austen, Professor Rohini said that while many male writers of the
contemporary world and the past stayed on isolated and peaceful places to write
their books; Sundari Devi and Jane Austen wrote books from the confines of
their houses, managing their homely affairs.
“Thus there are women writers in Hindi and other
languages, who have addressed the issue of the subjugation of women in society
and opposed the traditional moral values imposed on women,” said Professor
Rohini.
While presiding over the function; AMU Pro Vice
Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali said that literature is a way of life, which
brings values of humanity in readers. He added that the best part of literature
is that writers run their imagination in all the ways to write a book and their
works become masterpieces. He further said that literature makes its readers
connect with the characters in the book.
Earlier on the occasion, Professor Abdul Aleem,
Chairperson, Department of Hindi delivered the welcome address. He said that
the Department of Hindi has been able to organise this lecture and other
lectures because of the cooperation and support of the AMU administration.
