Dr Arvind Subramanain delivers Extension Lecture in AMU
Aligarh, April 6: Dr Arvind
Subramanain, Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India today delivered
an extension lecture on ‘Indian Economy—Key Issues and Challenges’ at the
Aligarh Muslim University’s Polytechnic auditorium. The lecture was organised
by the Department of Economics, AMU in collaboration with the University’s
Cultural Education Centre.
On the occasion, Dr Subramanain pointed out that the main idea of
having a lecture like this is to create an informed citizenry from amongst the
young students and to create awareness on how policy making is done in New
Delhi. Speaking about the students in
AMU, Dr Subramanain said that he is touched by the eagerness and dedication of
AMU students and highly impressed with the way they approached him for this
extension lecture.
He added that as a part of the Ministry of Finance, a Chief Economic
Advisor has more freedom to say things, which some others in the Ministry of
Finance might not be able to say. Dr Subramanain added, however, he cannot
misuse this freedom and has to exercise it with a responsibility.
Dr Subramanain further said that just when he was about to table Annual
Economic Survey report in the parliament before the presentation of the Union
Budget, he learnt that getting the report tabled in the parliament comes with a
lot of responsibility as the first Annual Economic Survey report was presented
by first Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Dr Subramanain further said that with the help of his team, he has
brought some important changes, which include converting the Annual Economic
Survey Report into three volumes consisting of data, background portions and
analysis.
He added that another achievement of his team was getting the Goods and
Services Tax (GST) Bill passed in the parliament. He pointed out that the
Central GST Bill was passed with the Integrated GST Bill, the GST Compensation
Bill and the UT-GST Bill.
Speaking on the hierarchy system in the government offices, Dr
Subramanain pointed out that the too much of hierarchy becomes a hurdle in the
performance of any institutional set-up.
While talking on why India is losing the value of currency, Dr
Subramanain said that since interest rates are not going up in the United
States of America and that more money is going out of America than coming in,
it has affected currency in India and other countries. “However, Indian
currency is gaining value again,” pointed Dr Subramanain.
On Demonetisation, Dr Subramanain pointed out that it is more of a political
issue with economic consequences and he would like to mention about it in his
memoirs.
While presiding over the function, AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt General
Zameer Uddin Shah (Veteran) informed that he is going to meet the Human
Resource Development Minister, Mr Prakash Javadekar on issue of increasing
funds for Aligarh Muslim University. General Shah added that he would like Dr
Subramanain to help AMU get more funds. General Shah, who was attending the
lecture with AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Brigadier S Ahmad Ali (Veteran) left for
Delhi after his address.
Before leaving the venue, the Vice Chancellor also felicitated Dr
Subramanian with a memento.

Department of Economics pointed out that Dr Subramanian has authored ‘India’s
Turn: Understanding the Economic Transformation published in 2008’ and
‘Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China’s Economic Dominance published in
September 2011.’ She further said that
Dr Subramanian has also co-authored ‘Who Needs to Open the Capital Account?’
which was published in 2012. “Dr Subramanian is currently ranked amongst the
top one percent of the world’s academic economists in terms of citation of
research and publications, according to the widely used REPEC rankings,” said
Prof Ahmad.

STATEMENT OF LT. GEN. ZAMEER UDDIN SHAH
1. I

have never ever sought any protection or help from Zorez. His reference to me
on this account is false and fabricated. I did call him 2-3 times to control
the students. All allegations levelled by him are false, fabricated and
malicious just to save him from persecution of his misconduct as captured by

Prof Dwivedi
delivers keynote address in National Seminar
Aligarh, April 7: Major Gen
(retd) Dr G G Dwivedi, Professor, Faculty of International Studies has recently
delivered a keynote address on ‘Excellence in Education through Disruptive
Innovation’ during a National Seminar on ‘Academic Audit’ sponsored by NAAC under
the aegis of DAV College Hoshiarpur.
During his lecture,
Prof Dwivedi said that late South African President, Mr Nelson Mandela was once
quoted saying that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world.
Sharing views of
eminent thinkers, articulated during the ‘Senior Executives Global Programme’
at the Harvard University last year, Prof Dwivedi said that there was general
consensus on India’s emergence as a global player in the coming decades but
with a caveat; low standards of education and inability to optimise the gains
of demographic dividend could prove to be serious impediments.
Prof Dwivedi further
spoke in details on major lacuna in the current system of education and how it
is a mismatch between the curriculum and employability. “The gap can be bridged
only by integrating education and skill development, thus enabling the students
to be job ready,” said Prof Dwivedi.
He further said that
with a workforce of around 600 million, there is requirement of creating one
million jobs a month over the next decade and the solution lies in developing
the entrepreneurial spirit among the Young.
“Leadership deficit
in the field of education merits serious attention of the policy makers as
competencies required to lead institutions effectively go beyond the realm of
academic brilliance,” said Prof Dwivedi while making a strong case for
redefining the role of a teacher from a transactional dispenser of knowledge to
a transformational mentor.
He pointed out that while
knowledge can be assessed with a finger touch or click of the mouse, ironically
wisdom is becoming scarce.
Meanwhile, replying to
a question on education-literacy interface, Prof Dwivedi stated that the
educated illiterates of 21st Century are those who refuse to learn, unlearn or
relearn. In the concluding remarks, he shared his conviction that only as a
knowledge economy; India can claim its rightful place in the global polity.

National Workshop on
Urdu Translation of Ambedkar’s writings start at AMU
Aligarh, April 13: The Aligarh Muslim University today organized the
inaugural session on the Second Two Day National Workshop on ‘Urdu Translation
of Dr BR Ambedkar’s Writings’. The event was presided over by Brig S Ahmad Ali
(Veteran), AMU Pro Vice Chancellor and was addressed by various eminent
speakers.
Brig Syed Ahmad Ali, in his presidential remark,
expressed his desire of mass propagation of Ambedkar’s ideas through the
translation of some of his far sighted works which include Ambedkar’s writings
and speeches on the dimension of territories and states and how the size of the
state affects administration and management. He also brought to focus
Ambedkar’s ideas on the Article 370 of the constitution, which speaks of the
issue of Kashmir. Along with these issues of contemporary relevance, Syed Ahmad
Ali also emphasized on Ambedkar’s Economic treatise, his role in the RBI and
his PhD thesis, “Problems of Rupee: Its Origin and Solution”. He congratulated
the Managing Editor, Urdu-CWBA Dr Ambedkar Foundation, Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui for his
dedication to the task.
The Guest of Honor Prof Emeritus Farhatullah Khan made a
practical observation that translation is something impossible but an
inevitable task. He stressed upon the beauty and persuasive effect of Urdu
language. Urdu, according to Prof Khan, is the most appropriate language to
powerfully express the ideas of a strong leader and reformer like Ambedkar. He
explained the complexities of translating such terms like child labour, dalit
etc from English to Urdu.
Dr Suhail Ahmad Farooqui of Jamia Millia Islamia, an
accomplished translator of more than hundred works which include Tagore’s
Gitanjali, commented that it is not
enough to know the language and it’s literal meaning but in order to reach more
approximation in translating a work we need to learn about the speakers and
their background as well. According to him source work and the translated work are
mirror images to each other.
The Dean, Faculty of Arts Professor Shaikh Mastan
emphasized the relevance of Ambedkar and his contribution in the making of
Present day India.
Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, the Managing Editor of the
translation project explained the aims and objectives of the workshop and threw

subjects like law, sociology, history and economics.
