Prof M S Ansari attends International Congress of Entomology in US

Aligarh, November 23: Professor Mohammad Shafiq Ansari recently attended the XXV International Congress of Entomology in Orlando, Florida, USA where he presented a research paper on ‘Biology of Thrips tabaci Lindeman on onion cultivars’ in the technical session of Agricultural and Forest Entomology.

During the paper presentation, Prof Ansari stressed that the management of Thrips tabaci is very important as it causes heavy damage and is also a predominant vector of Iris Yellow Spot Virus in onion crops throughout the world.

He further stated that the biological parameters of this insect should be studied before formulation of management program. The paper was highly appreciated by scientists attending the session. During the paper presentation, Prof Ansari also talked about the development of Science of Entomology.

This congress is held after every four years. It was attended by 6,682 delegates from 102 countries of the world. A total of 5,396 scientific papers were presented, which were contributed by 58.14% from USA and 41.86% from other countries of the world.

Prof Ansari is associated with the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Aligarh Muslim University. He has guided eight PhD students. He has also established first apiary for research and teaching purpose in the Department of Plant Protection. Prof Ansari has completed two major research projects as Principal Investigator on the management of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella on cabbage and cauliflower and a third project as CO-PIon, the management of fruit fly through nematode as bioagent.

Prof Ansari has published 5 books, 68 research papers and 5 book chapters besides contributing to scientific journals on international and national repute. He is a regional councillor of Indian Society for the Advances of Insect Science, India and reviewer of refereed journals like Journal of Economic Entomology, Crop Protection, and Entomological Research among others.
